Preliminary Task - School Magazine

Flat plans
These are my flat plan designs which identify the different sections of my cover and contents page layouts.

15 Found Images

These are the 15 images used through out the production of my school magazine front cover and contents page. The images of the archbishop Ilsley students were taken by myself.

The first 4 images represent athletics and sport within the school.

The image shows a PE teacher with a class celebrating in a photo, This image could be placed at the top of my contents page as a story can easily be developed from this image. A potential story could be that the image showsthe yr7 basketball team winning a tournament with their teacher as the coach.

Images of teachers and students (possible front covers)

This image could be used as my cover page photo because it features a student which in one of the questionnaires proved to be most popular as what the audience would expect a school magazine front cover to be.

Similarly to my mock up school magazine the following images could feature along side a remembrance day mass article.

Image from the OAP Christmas party held by the school. This is also another potential contents page image that would go along side a corresponding cover line.

Images of objects which denote school (mise en scene)

Bar code
A bar code is a key components of any magazine as it complies with the magazine codes and conventions.

Preliminary task magazine - Photo shop production process print screens

Below are a few screenshots highlighting the production process of my final preliminary task cover and contents page. I created them using Photoshop.

To begin with I used the gradient tool to graduate my background colour from burgundy to white.

Next I chose to add a long shot image of a student captured mid way through executing a football trick in their PE kit.

I then made my image more appealing by adjusting the hue and saturation of the image to make it brighter and therefore more interesting to my target audience.

Next using the selection tool I cut out my main image using the wand tool and pasted it onto my background and positioned it to the centre of the page.

Next I added my magazines masthead.

To adhere with the codes and conventions of a media product I added social media platforms logo's. I have included a Facebook and twitter logo so that my target audience will be aware that there are other platforms available on which my magazine can be accessed.

In the latter stages of the product process of my preliminary magazine i added all of my cover lines/sell lines.

In summery I have added a masthead at the top of the magazine along with information about the content inside. the different pieces of information have been highlighted with yellow backgrounds to stand out to the target audience (These are known as box outs). I have used a larger font for my title to show it's importance and a smaller font for my content, keeping the font the same to create synergy of the brand.

I redesigned the completed versions of my preliminary magazine cover and contents page as I identified important features that had been left out in the production of my magazine and as a result I decided to implement the changes needed in order to improve my magazine. The features that I felt were left out were more images which would go further in attracting my target audience and a side strip for the actual contents of the magazine. Most importantly I felt that the convergent links and the pug/school badge were not positioned correctly so I repositioned them. The final cover and contents pages are below.

My Preliminary Task designs

These are my final Contents and Cover pages which I made using Photoshop.

Further possible improvements could be to add pictures to my cover lines, an issue date, a bar code and a price.

I have altered the image on my front cover as the examiner specification does not accept two of the same images on both of the cover and contents page.

  1. Superb analysis, you have done what you have been instructed to, along with a brilliant use of media techniques predominantly about the central image (cover photo) which makes me want to purchase the magazine.

  2. Sublime analysis on you preliminary task, you have showed that you clearly understand all the steps and processes that it takes to create an effective magazine front cover. However i would also include a slightly more in depth opening line that explains what that page is all about. Well done buddy good analysis !
